Salty Spitoon Guide: Are You Tough Enough to Enter?

I remember watching “No Weenies Allowed” and wondering about the Salty Spitoon. While I didn’t have a Salty Spitoon guide to reference, I want to change that.

After looking into the bar and rewatching the episode that features it, I learned a lot. It might not be as well-known as the Krusty Krab, but it’s an interesting part of the show.

Be sure you learn about its appearance and role in the show, especially since it’s set to make another appearance in a future episode.

Bottom Line Up Front

The Salty Spitoon is a bar that only allows tough fish and other creatures. SpongeBob wants so badly to get in, but he can’t, and knowing the details helps explain why.

Appearance and Features

The Salty Spitoon may not be one of the most visited places in the show, but it has a unique look. That look matches the vibe you’d expect from a place that only accepts tough individuals.

Despite the scary appearance, there’s something about the place that makes SpongeBob want to get in.

Whether you can get into the bar or not, you know it’s not a place for everyone. Consider an overview of the appearance and features of the building.

Outside Features

On the outside, the Salty Spitoon looks like a rundown piece of a boat, similar to many other buildings in Bikini Bottom. There’s a sidewalk leading up to it where fish line up to get inside.

You can see smoke coming out of the chimney, and you’ll have to get past the bouncer. When the club is open, you can see a line of buff fish in line to get in.

It looks like the building has two levels, but it’s hard to tell. On top of the building, there’s a sign for The Salty Spitoon making it clear where you’re going.

Inside Features

When we first see the Salty Spitoon, we don’t get to see inside the club. However, there will be a later episode where you do get a look at the interior, and some think you can see inside it in one of the movies.

From the movie image, it looks very much like a stereotypical bar with minimal lighting and a reddish hue. All of the customers look as buff as you might expect.

Personally, I don’t think I’d enjoy spending time inside the Salty Spitoon. Call me a weenie, but I wouldn’t want to hang out in a dark environment with creatures that could beat me up.

Location in Bikini Bottom

You’ll find the Salty Spitoon near Goo Lagoon. We learn this after SpongeBob and Sandy get into a karate fight and Sandy causes SpongeBob to fly into the back of a guy waiting in line to enter the bar.

It’s across the street from Weenie Hut Jr. and Super Weenie Hut Jr., which the bouncer suggests SpongeBob visits. The sponge claims he’s not a weenie, but it’s pretty clear to many fans that he definitely fits in there rather than the Salty Spitoon.

We can’t tell how close it is to the beach though. After all, there are some episodes that feature the lagoon with no mention or visual cameo of the bar.

Role of the Salty Spitoon in SpongeBob SquarePants

The Salty Spitoon isn’t one of the most common locations in the show. However, when it does appear, it has a huge role in the given episode.

We first see it in the episode “No Weenies Allowed” in season 3. Sandy manages to get inside, but SpongeBob can’t seem to get access no matter what he does.

The bouncer, Reg, doesn’t think SpongeBob is tough enough. Not until SpongeBob beats up Patrick without touching him, that is.

Unfortunately for our favorite sponge, he slips on an ice cube as he goes inside. Then, he has to go to Weenie Hut General for medical care.

As of this writing, that’s the only appearance of the bar. However, an upcoming episode will showcase SpongeBob getting a job working the grill at the Salty Spitoon.

I’m excited to see how that goes and can only imagine the shenanigans that will happen. I already saw some preview images of the inside, so it will be interesting to see how SpongeBob does at his new job.

Role in SpongeBob SquarePants Video Games

The Salty Spitoon appears to have a bigger role in SpongeBob video games than in the show. For example, you can see a pink version of it in the Game Boy Advance Game “Battle for Bikini Bottom.”

In “The Yellow Avenger,” you can see it in the restaurant district, but it’s only for show. I’m not sure why they moved it unless there are other restaurants around the lagoon in the show that we never see.

You have to fight PatBoss in the Salty Spitoon in the video game “SpongeBob’s Truth or Square.” Finally, you’ll see the bar in a picture with Plankton in “Know Your Nemesis.”

What Makes Someone Tough Enough to Enter

the salty spitspoon bouncer

If you want to get into the Salty Spitoon, you have to convince the bouncer. It seems like he’ll allow a variety of acts to grant entry to someone.

That can be nice because Bikini Bottom residents don’t have to all do the same thing. After all, there are different ways to be tough in real life, so it makes sense to have options in the show.

Here are some ways characters are able to get into the Salty Spitoon in SpongeBob SquarePants.

Eating a Bowl of Nails

One of the fish we meet tells Reg that he had a bowl of nails for breakfast. After clarifying that he ate the nails without milk, the fish can go inside.

What I find funny about this is that you don’t actually have to do it. If you’re convincing when you say you ate nails for breakfast, the bouncer will let you in.

So SpongeBob could have easily come up with some other ridiculous thing to eat and claim he did so. Of course, that is a pretty extreme thing to do, though lying could make you tough.

Ripping Off a Tattoo

I’m not talking about copying, but this is how Sandy gets in. She manages to rip the bouncer’s tattoo right off his chest and replace it upside down.

After asking if he has more tattoos, he moves her right along, and I don’t blame him. For one, ripping someone’s skin off is pretty darn tough.

But also, I wouldn’t want that to happen to me twice if I was in Reg’s shoes. Now, this one isn’t something you can lie about when it’s the bouncer’s tattoo, but you could lie about doing it to someone else.

Getting Into a Fight

Then, there’s the classic fight scene to get into the Salty Spitoon. We see a couple of fish get into a fight, and the doorman approves both of them for access into the club.

Later in the episode, Patrick gives SpongeBob the idea to fake beat up the star. That way, SpongeBob doesn’t have to get into a real fight, but he can still come off as tough.

Of course, Patrick being Patrick forgets the plan and starts to beat up SpongeBob. But after reminding his friend, SpongeBob doesn’t have to do anything to hurt Patrick since he makes it look like he’s getting beat up.

Silently Making Fun

Another no-name fish makes fun of SpongeBob without having to speak. Reg believes that’s enough proof that the fish is suitable for the Salty Spitoon.

Now, making fun of someone isn’t cool, but it’s a common way people show they’re tough. So while I don’t endorse doing that, it’s an interesting way to enter the exclusive venue.

Impersonation

Then, there’s the drifter from out of town who looks like SpongeBob. The doorman and the audience think he’s the main character until SpongeBob walks up in a clown wig.

It turns out there’s someone else out there that looks like SpongeBob or made himself look that way. After that, Reg feels bad about not believing the drifter and lets him in.

Make Tattoos Dance

Another character is able to get in by making a tattoo on his arm dance. SpongeBob uses this guy to try to get inside by making himself look like another tattoo on the fish.

The sponge dances to try and look like the seahorse tattoo. However, Reg catches that it’s a fake tattoo, and he rips SpongeBob off before letting the guy through.

I’ll be honest, if you can make your tattoo do anything, that’s pretty cool. I don’t know that it’s necessarily tough, but it’s certainly unique.

Returning Customers

If Reg knows you and knows you’re tough enough, he’ll let you in. This happens to one fish who doesn’t have to do anything to prove he’s tough.

I imagine that fish had to prove itself at one point or another. Maybe he knows the bouncer outside of work and so never had to do anything specific.

Or perhaps the fish has been to the Salty Spitoon before. In that case, it wouldn’t make sense to have to do something tough every time you want to get inside.

Salty Spitoon Fun Facts

As you watch the episode “No Weenies Allowed” or the upcoming episode “The Salty Sponge,” consider some fun facts. I learned a lot about the place when I was researching it for this article.

Whether you’ve watched the show or not, the bar has some cool details. Keep the following in mind when you see it in the show or when you want to share some facts with your friends.

A Monopoly Location

If you like board games, you’ll love playing SpongeBob Monopoly. What’s more, the Salty Spitoon is one of the pink locations, and it’s three spaces after the jail corner.

That means it’s worth more than places like the Chum Bucket and Patrick’s Rock. Of course, it’s also more expensive than Weenie Hut Jr.

As a Monopoly fan, I’d suggest buying it if you can. The places right after the jail spot tend to get more traffic due to the nature of their location on the board.

Miswritten

You can find the “No Weenies Allowed” episode on the Sea Stories DVD. However, that DVD describes the restaurant as the Salty Saloon, rather than the Salty Spitoon.

I can’t say I blame whoever wrote that description. After all, a saloon is a more common term than a spitoon, and I keep getting a warning that I’m spelling the place wrong.

However, that’s not the case, and you have to remember that too. Fortunately, you can still enjoy the episode on that DVD since it’s fine aside from the description.

Inside Secrets

Up until 2022, we only got to see the outside of the Salty Spitoon. Sure, there’s a bit of a dark entryway that we can see as fish (and eventually SpongeBob) enter the place.

However, we finally get to see the inside of the restaurant when the show releases “The Salty Sponge.” I did find an image on Reddit where people speculate that a scene from the SpongeBob movie is from the Salty Spitoon.

It will be cool to see if that’s the case when we see the interior of the bar. Either way, I’m sure it will look just like how you might expect a bar for only the toughest fish to look.

Online Quizzes

If you like taking personality quizzes, you can take one to learn if you’d make it into the Salty Spitoon. I took the quiz and miraculously would get into the bar.

Now, the questions are a little silly because some have to do with what you’d eat. So if you’re a vegetarian or super picky (like me), that could affect your results.

Still, it’s a fun quiz to take to learn if you’re tough enough or if you’d end up at Weenie Hut Jr. So give the quiz a try and send it to all of your SpongeBob-loving friends.
